CHINA YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK (CYCAN)
CCYCAN is the acronym for China Youth Climate Action Network, a joint organization formed by seven outstanding youth environmental organizations in August 2007. Combining their respective advantages and resources, the co-founded organizations became the first youth non-profit climate organization in China.
Since the setup of CYCAN more than 450 colleges and universities have participated in activities initiated or sponsored by CYCAN; thousands of students were directly involved, and a number of over one million were indirectly influenced by CYCAN. It is a testimony to the burgeoning impetus from young people to understand, recognize and actively participate in the progress of climate change, and provides a platform of growth and opportunity for students who have the ability and passion for climate-related issues.
After three years of development, CYCAN has grown from a team of student volunteers into a youth environmental nonprofit organization, gradually established the direction of her own goals, and actively explored and constantly improved the organization structure. Since spearheading the first Chinese youth delegation for the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP 15), CYCAN has played an integral role in organizing subsequent UN climate conferences thereafter, including the Framework Conference on Climate Change in Durban in November 2011. Domestically, CYCAN has coordinated environmental initiatives across China, and has organized events echoing international summits, such as the recent Guangzhou +20 conference as a lead-up to the June 2012 Rio Earth Summit. Over the past few years, CYCAN has gone to great length in promoting Chinese youth awareness and participation in climate change.
In July 2010 CYCAN made an innovative stride towards streamlining its governance structure by establishing a Council Board of Directors and a Secretariat, facilitating the cooperation between the Board of Supervisor and the newly elected secretariat executive team in their common goal of effectively and democratically pushing forward CYCAN projects.
With its exemplary track record over the past few years, CYCAN has made itself into a promoter, a facilitator and a coordinator for youth activism, dedicated herself to be a member-driven, democratically governed, broadly participatory, active and innovative, open and transparent platform for brilliant and aspirant students aiming to bring about progress and change on the environmental and climate front.
